Pet Preparedness Month: Suggestions from a Vet in Edmonds

Pet-Preparedness-Month-Suggestions-from-a-Vet-in-Edmonds

Throughout the year, different days and months are associated with various holidays and events. June is Pet Preparedness Month, and it’s a time to turn your attention to ensuring that you have a disaster plan for your furry friends. You never know when disaster might strike, and taking time to prepare now could save your beloved companion’s life. As a vet in Edmonds, Stoneridge Animal Hospital is here to help you care for your pets in all situations. That’s why we decided to write this blog with some helpful tips on how to ensure your pet is prepared. Keep reading to learn more!

Update Their Identification

Have you moved in the last few months? Or gotten a phone number? If so, now is a great time to double-check that the information on your pet’s identification tag is up-to-date. Log in to their microchip account, too, to make sure that info is current. Even if you are positive that everything is correct, it never hurts to take a look.

Build an Emergency Kit

A well-stocked pet emergency kit is a must-have for any animal owner. If you don’t already have one, this month is a great opportunity to put one together. Gathering up some essential pet supplies and keeping them all in one easy-to-access location ensures that you will have everything you need to care for your furry friend in an emergencfy. Some important things to include are:

  • Copies of your pet’s health history and vaccination records and a recent picture
  • A five-day supply of clean water and food for each pet.
  • Bowls
  • Leashes and collars
  • Litter box and litter
  • A pet first-aid kit
  • A list of hotels, shelters, etc. that accept pets (in case you have to evacuate with your pet)

Make a Plan

Do you know what you will do in the event of a house fire, severe storm, flood, or any other type of disaster? If not, now is the time to make a plan. Having a plan of action means you will know what to do when disaster strikes. Planning ahead prevents panic and can save lives.
