Important Pet Summer Safety Advice from a Vet near Shawnee
The summer season is almost here, and now is an excellent time to go out and enjoy time with friends and loved ones. It’s also a great time to learn how hot, sunny weather can harm your pet. As the temperature climbs this summer, it is important to know how to keep your canine companion or feline friend safe from parasites as well as heat-related injuries and illnesses. Here at Stoneridge Animal Hospital, we do not want any pets to face heat-related illnesses this summer. Learn how to protect your pet with these tips from a skilled vet near Shawnee.
Let Your Pet Hang Out at Home
Your pet may love taking rides with you, but you shouldn't leave them sitting in your car in the summer. Leaving them at home is the safest option. It only takes half an hour for the interior of a car or truck to climb to 120° when the outside temperature is 85°. Parking in a shaded spot and cracking the windows doesn’t provide any real benefit. Leaving the vehicle running with the air conditioner switched on isn't a safe idea, either. Any vehicle can have mechanical problems, and it's possible for unattended pets to unintentionally switch off the air conditioner or even bump the car out of park and into neutral. Leaving a dog or cat in a car jeopardizes their safety. No matter how much your pet likes going with you, it just isn't worth the risk.
Make Sure They Are Consuming Enough Water
Pets need to have fresh water available to them at all times. This is especially important during hot weather, though, because of the increased risk of dehydration. Like people, pets need to stay well-hydrated during hot weather. Keep their water dish at home full at all times, and be sure to bring some water with you when taking your four-legged best friend for a walk.
Avoid Hot Pavement
Pavement gets hot fast during the summer months and can burn your precious pet's paw pads. Black asphalt is the worst offender and can be up to 60° hotter than the temperature of the air. Serious burns can occur within one minute of contact with hot pavement. When possible,we recommend walking your dog on the grass during warm weather. When you must walk on a paved surface, check the temperature with your hand before allowing your pet to walk on it. If you cannot comfortably hold your hand on it for at least ten seconds, your pet cannot safely walk on it. Buying a pair of booties is a great way to protect your pet's paws when walking on hot pavement is a must.
